The 90-minute documentary film Günter is a fascinating look at one man's mission to subvert the system and give a little bit of freedom to the citizens of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) during the Cold War. In the film we meet Günter Kaiser, an 80 year-old retired ‘Berliner’ and former licensed telecommunications technician who allowed the transmission of the state enemy into his fellow citizen’s living rooms.
The film reveals the influence telecommunications technicians had on state media policy and the extent to which they witnessed the erosion of socialism. The film offers a reappraisal of an important aspect of GDR media policy and the desire for pluralism.
